A project i want to take up: expanding off of blackbox!
ok, i love blackbox, but there are so many features i want that it doesnt have (not big ones to defeat the purpose of it, but things like showing minimized icons, adding in other people's patches. enhance its ability to be used with gnome and kde, and actually a lot more i have in mind.
if i did something like this and changind the name of my version, would i be frowned upon? or would people actually help me an dpossibly use it?
i would keep support for all bb tools and styles of course btw.
In the spirit of the Linux community, you would be frowned upon. Your 'new program' would probably not be used by many at all. If you wanted to make additions to BlackBox, I would suggest you get in tough with the authors. It may even turn out that they have become uninterested in the project, and so may hand you the reigns. If you want to be taken seriously, make the alterations on your machine, submit the proposals to the authors along with your code, and see what happens.

they are no longer working on blackbox as far as anyone knows. i have tried to email them with no luck.
It appears that BlackBox has stopped being developed, but FluxBox is an offshoot with is still going (latest seems to be only 18 days ago - 2nd Nov, 2001).
if development stops on a project... then in my personal opinion it's open season for anyone who wants to take over... you just need to give the original authors due credit. just to be polite about things tho, it's best to get into contact with the originals, to see whether you can just take over the project or if you need to start your own offshoot.
