i am doing a lot of php scripting and i am using frontpage on a windows machine to do a lot of the html coding. i was wondering if anyone knows a good WYSIWYG (visual based) editor for linux. I don't need it to be too fancy, just good enough for creating forms and basic tables and such.

Well, there are many out there, never really used a WYSWYG editor as I use vi or a simple text editor in Linux, but you can check out many sites like sourceforge.net or maybe linuxapps.com for many to check out and try. Most that I have seen, seem to come with many different varieties of tools and layouts.

Or you can always load Wine and use any Windows version you prefer within Linux.

I agree rshaw.

Quanta is a QT-based editor (KDE)

Bluefish is GTK-based (GNOME)

I highly recommend Bluefish. I do all my HTML work with it. This site's HTML was built with it:

It's also good for PHP coders, it has a fairly complete PHP command library.

KDE's advanced editor(comes with the distro) also does most syntax highlighting. You might want to check on phpedit. I don't know if linux binaries are available, but it looks like they distribute source if your interested in(trying) to build it for linux.

i have both quanta and blue fish on my system now. Havn't really played around with it much, but its my understanding that theya are not WYSISWG (what you see is what you get). Correct my if i am wrong. i think it is much easier to just create a web page visuall, then have php print out that code and make the dynamic changes.

For a quick review, look at
http://www.maximumlinux.com/howtos/howto/2001-01-26/

Other thoughts - Coffeecup, a q+d html editor on the Windows platform is also available for Linux, is free, but not open source.

Bluefish has fans, appears capable, is WYSIWYN, the N being Need, but I think I determine what I need better than they do...

Webhand (see the review) is probably best described as beta, but looks interesting.

Web Designer has promise but is not WYSIWIG

Ashe looks like what I'd try first, if I were you. From the RPI guys, looks powerful with a "double decker" approach (write code in upper window, see results in lower window).

Or, of course, use Star office and publish your page created in any app to HTML.
