909 mb kcore file in proc

I partitioned very little for my linux distro (Mandrake 9.1) and I now need to clean out files. I found that in /proc/ there is a file called kcore described as program crash data. It is 909 mb, a large proportion of my partition. Is it safe to delete this file because I have no need for information reguarding program crashes. I have read from other posts that proc is in physical ram and cannot be deleted. I only have 768 mb of ram, so could this file be reducing my system performance?

/proc (it keeps track of running processes) is not a real filesystem and that will disappear when /proc is dismounted on shutdown/reboot.

You can safely delete core files if you don't de-bug or submit bug reports/

It will not delete. I changed the permissions, but it says access denied and resets the permissions.

haha you can't delete that file. It holds all the data which is in your ram at the moment.

And I am not lughing at you, I just remembered that I had the same problem and frothed at the mouth trying to delete it till i figured out what it is.

However, rrodden111, since it is a virtual filesystem, the 909Mb file doesn't actually exist, so deleting it will do very little! Unless you have a need to go poking around in the proc directory (it can be quite handy for finding out system information), I would ignore it if I were you.
