640 by 480 only display option

Hello
Totally new to Linux.
I just did my first installation of ubuntu 2 weeks ago, took forever to figure it out, would not install, ended up haveing to run killdisk then it went fine, (set up a dual boot with XP). I have not finished configureing Xp as I got tired of seting it up just to wipe it out again to try another install of ubuntu.

The computer is an acer aspire T180. Xp cuurently reports the vieo card as an NVidia Geforce 6100nForcee 405

Ubuntu list the driver as Gallium o.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.4, 128bits).
Running off the CD the correct drivers installed but not from the harddrive. Everything is so large you cannot get all all the options that would be available, but I can see 640 by 480 is the only option. I went to the software center I was going to get "NVidia binary X.org" but I do not have a search. I tried "sudo apt-get install NVida binary X.org" but nothing was found. I installed synaptic and gdebi. Maybe I am just not serching the correct term for my problem. Any pointers?
Thanks

There is an option to install 'Additional Drivers'. If you use 14.04, go to System Settings, Software and Updates and there should be a tab in that window for additional drivers. Just click on it and wait for it to finish. It should give you multiple options including one recommended.

YES! Thank-you

That did the trick. First time in said there are no proprietory drivers being used said an alternate driver was being used. The first one listed was version 304.117 and stated that it was tested there were non recommended so I selected the first one.
Rebooted and changed some settings and everything was fine. Back into the additional drivers and now the one Iam using said it was the recommended one.
Now I even have the search box in the software center.
Thanks
