40 gig hd help
I built a pentium 1 computer, 166mhz processor, i486. 64mb ram etc etc, I use a 8 gig hard drive in it now. I have a spair 40 gig hard drive. But when I plug it in and unplug the other 8 gig and try to use the computer with the 40 it doesn't work. Can anyone help me? is it possible to use this hard drive with this computer? or do I need a bios update or something????

for one thing its not a 486 series its a 586 if its a pentium, also you arent mentioning if you have it as a master, or a slave, or anything... need to provide more information

Or if you have anything installed on the 40... Or if you want to send it to me... :D

Yes this could be a bios problem, because of the hd size. IIRC 32 gig is one of those border values. The bios should be able to handle LBA. Try an update.

Where can I get a update to my bios?
|
From the board manufacturers website.

So I got to take apart my computer look at the bios company goto there website and hopefully they will have a update from 1997... which is a exe i install in windows that changes bios around?

To get a BIOS flash, yeah probably. There are (sometimes) options to use boot floppies to flash your BIOS so you don't necessarily have to have win actually installed.

Until recently I had *never* used windows to flash a BIOS, and would never have thought of doing such a thing.
Fortunately the motherboard I flashed was one of those newfangled dual-bios boards and has a backup incase it gets flubbed - so that wasn't so bad. But urm... I very much doubt that there'll be a windows installer for his motherboard, and a boot floppy routine is almost certainly going to be needed. Not for the faint of hearts, but the only way you'll see that 40 gig I'm afraid. Slick. |
