4.4.23 - Using defined distribution of 'unstable' in the changelog ?

I was building 4.4.23 (longterm) from kernel.org. Towards the end of the build I see the message "Using defined distribution of 'unstable' in the changelog". Why is it "unstable" when I thought all the releases there as mainline, stable, longterm were all "stable" ??

Could someone explain if it's a bug or expected?

Thanks.
