32mb PCI Radeon card and XFree86

I can't get X to use my ATI Radeon 32mb SDR PCI card as anything except "Generic VGA". I have 4.0.1a and Red Hat 7. The Radeon chipset is supposedly supported according to the hardware lists. anyone know what i can do?

btw, somewhat of a newbie. intermediate Windows user, but don't know a lick of programming.
