2GB memory 'runs out' on MDK 10.2

Hi all

I don't know if I'm missing something basic, but the way the memory works on my Dell Precision 650 with 2GB physical memory is confusing me. Quite soon after a reboot I reach a stage where top tells me almost all the physical memory is being used

Mem: 2075220k total, 1997908k used, 77312k free, 103660k buffers
Swap: 5132728k total, 3112k used, 5129616k free, 1243488k cached

even though there are no processes using very much memory

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
1250 daniel 15 0 288m 110m 21m S 0.3 5.5 8:08.00 java_vm
7888 root 15 0 207m 82m 10m S 0.7 4.1 88:32.67 X
9974 daniel 15 0 138m 78m 36m S 0.3 3.9 1:44.26 acroread
16152 daniel 15 0 81260 50m 17m S 0.0 2.5 3:32.85 firefox-bin
9124 daniel 15 0 72676 41m 17m S 0.0 2.1 0:14.59 evolution

9174 daniel 15 0 35152 24m 14m S 0.0 1.2 4:31.64 kicker

How can this be? Is this normal? My uname -a gives
Linux dodoliv.liv.ac.uk 2.6.11-6mdksmp #1 SMP Tue Mar 22 15:40:42 CET 2005 i686 Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.66GHz unknown GNU/Linux

Thanks in advance

Daniel

Thanks for that. I did check other threads but obviously not hard enough.
