2.6 kernel slow down once in a while...

Every 15 min or so, the mouse will just skip and any icons I push don't do anything for about 10-15 seconds until after its done doing that. It is very annoying, then all the sudden it will start working fine...

I could go back to the 2.4, but then I would have to reinstall debian.

Or, install the very latest 2.6 to see if that helps. I think i have 2.6.3.
Anyone know how to upgrade the kernel with apt-get?

check and see if DMA is enabled on the drive:
hdparm -d /dev/hda

where /dev/hda is your primary drive.
also this command is ran as root.

You should run that as root.

about the slowdowns..
The one thing i found out is that 2.6.5 had quite a better performace than 2.6.4(atleast on my comp)
Not sure about it, but i remembered also reading someting about this in the changelogs of the kernel

anyways.. a newer kernel-version might help.. 2.6 isn't quite done yet
(although i found the latest version to be the best version ever )

Yeah, I am running 2.6.5 now and it is better. I only got it once for a few seconds (much better than before though)

And I did run hdparm as root, not sure why it isn't working. Is there something I need to apt-get to get it to run? (running debian)

Thanks

ok well if your getting command not found as root, then that more
so is saying that /sbin is not in your PATH, so type the complete
path to the program.
/sbin/hdparm -d /dev/hda
