14g for 2,975 songs?

I didn't know what to search for to get an answer, so heres my problem:

I run ubuntu 8.04, and when i was syncing my ipod using Songbird, i noticed that for only having around 2975 songs, 14g was a lot of space to be taking up. When i view the properties it says i have 4,314 items, when i only have 2975 songs. What am i missing?
What is taking up so much space?

Well from my quick estimate it comes to around 4.5 meg per song which sounds about right to me. Regarding the larger number of files, I imagine that most of them will relate to holding data about your tracks in a format used by iPod/songbird, I wouldn't worry about them, infact i'd leave them alone.

nah its completely normal, but if you think that is too much space for you, you can always choose some better compression or decrease quality a bit.

You can convert them all to WAV and have it take up 140GB!

My collection has roughly 4,000 songs (mostly old CD's converted to MP3) and it takes about 14GB's worth of space.

Your collection might have a higher bit rate per song. Most of mine are at 128, your's could be 192 or 320. This would make your collection take more room on your drive.
