[Solved] GNOME error / How to switch splash screens

Hi all!
Hi everyone,
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome 2.3
Recently I've made an update that has caused some conflict in my system, this is one of the reasons I want to switch to Debian asap.
Whenever I enter the splash screen, the following message appears in the top right corner:
'Install problem the gnome configuration defaults for Gnome power manager have not installed correctly'
The splash screen itself looks like something is not right. I'm unable to perform a login into my account.
Whenever I try to do so I get a black screen and then I'm redirected back to the splash screen.
Prior to not being able to log in, I had noticed that the GUI was being quite buggy and after 3-4 sessions it stopped permitting me to login.
Unfortunately I was foolish enough to ignore these signs that something was not right and didn't back up my data in time.
I've tried performing package recoveries, but these have not helped.
I've done memory tests in order to see if hard drives are showing errors, but it seems nothing is wrong.
I've read the following thread: http://askubuntu.com/questions/57159/th
One post claims
apt-get purge gnome-power-manager
and,
apt-get install gnome-power-manager
solves the issue.
I've done as it claims, and have been unsuccessful.
At the moment I really don't mind reinstalling my OS from scratch, but I need to recover the data first.
Unfortunately my home directory is encrypted.
I'd be very grateful if someone could come up for a solution to my problem.
I've installed openbox, however the GNOME splash screen seems buggy and does not allow me to complete my log in. In fact, let me elaborate on that:
The GNOME splashscreen detects Openbox and allows me to choose it as the desired GUI for my session.
After entering my password in an attempt to log in (With Openbox selected) the screen turns black with only a cursor available.
This phase typically lasts about 20-30s after which I get redirected to the Splashscreen.
Does Openbox have its own Splashscreen which I can select using some command in the same way that I switch between gdm and kdm?

Many thanks.

from the link you provided, I would suggest a couple of things...
Code:
sudo dkpg-reconfigure gnome-power-manager
or... from a Ctrl+Alt+F1 console, I would login as yourself and
Code:
mv ~/.config ~/.config.org
mv ~/.gconf ~/.gconf.org
exit
then Ctrl+Alt+F7 to login back in graphically. Restart

NOTE: Moving these directories will reset your gnome 'experience' back to a default setting(s).

Link also suggests lack of disk space may be a possible cause...but may not apply...
Code:
df -h
Have a Great Day!

This solved my problem:
From terminal:
sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop

----
@Habitual: Didn't manage to get it to work that way, but thanks for your contribution. Hope you have a great day too!
