'netstat -apute' shows X is LISTENing

I have been trying many liveCDs of different distros and on running following command as root:
Quote:
netstat -apute
I find that many distributions have X or X11 in the LISTEN mode. I believe it is required for logging on to a remote computer, but average PC user is unlikely to need it and this feature can become a security risk. Then why is it that this is the default setting on most occassions?

Maybe some distros don't worry about this because their default firewall rules block the X11 ports, or they've configured it to only listen on loopback.. Whether it's listening or not is only half of the story. Having said that, I'm sure some distro's will leave it wide open, so it pays to be vigilant.

As to why a distro maintainer chooses to do it one way or another, or even not at all, you'll have to ask them.

Live CD's are not a secure install. They have been created to get things to work in a temporary fashion and could leave all sorts of holes open.

If you want, you can make your own live cd but I'd think the users would be upset then things like xterm won't run.
