Znes 1.36 - how do I run it anyway?

I just got linux installed and I'm fairly new to this stuff. I just downloaded Znes136src.tar.gz, extracted it to a folder, and now have no idea how to run Znes. As a matter of fact, I haven't a clue how executables themselves really work in linux, so far everything I've ran is from the gnome menu. How do I run Znes, and what do I do with it after I've extrated it? So far it apears like there's just a few short, unhelpfull readmes.

You have to compile the executable yourself.

Open a terminal in the folder you unzipped.
Type:

./configure
make
make install

Pardon my ignorance, but what on earth? Why would it come uncompiled? Why not come ready to run? And why involve the terminal?

You have to compile it because what you downloaded was source code, not an executable file. Many Linux programs come uncompiled so people can look at the source code and change it if they want to. If it came ready to run then people couldn't see how it worked.

The ./configure command sets things up and makes sure you have everything you need. The make command compiles the program, and the make install moves the files to the right locations.

Or something like that.
