You know what would be cool!
I'm 37 and I grew up in an era when the coolest thing to have was either a Commodore 64, Vic 20 or an Atari 400 or 800 (wow, you had a real keyboard with the Atari 800)!
But here's my point! I'm thinking with not so many companies yet ready to poor huge resources into the Linux platform for their high performance games "yet", how about we look at all the "oldies" the came out with the computers of 15 to 25 years back! All the old favs that came with those machines. All you need is to be running an emulator and come on! Linux with or without wine is the perfect place to have those emulators running in an X-window! Wouldn't it be soooo cool! To play all those games that came on all those machines and yet now on your Linux box. Everything is relative! I know how much we like the latest and greatest stuff, but there's something to be said about the old favourites! Incidentally, does anyone know off hand where to find emulators for old Vic 20 and Atari games (not to mention the games themselves)? If so, would you mind posting here. I'm a little bored and it kinda sux that I got to leave my beautiful Slack environment to play anothe pathetic game of Starcraft! Something like these! - perry |
I'm already doing this and I'm supposed to be in the prime demographic for first-person ultra-realistic 3d shooters:D So far, I've got snes9x with openGL support running great for all those SNES games. I'm working on getting together an Apple II emulator, although the Apple is still sitting right next to my Linux Box and fully functional, mostly to try to finish a game I started over 12 years ago that my little sister erased (after being warned about the dangers of floppy disks and magnets). This is a real pain, because you need to find rom files for the system as well as the disk images. Looking through the Debian list, there's an Atari800 emulator, but this also needs system ROMs. There's also the MAME/MESS projects for arcade machines...

Assuming you own the games, you could get ROMs for slightly newer stuff like the Atari 2600, Game Gear and stuff like that from Rom-World Beware, if you download from there, the downloads take ages to start, (due to their authorization system, but once they've started you should easily get 50KB/s.
As for older than that, such as the Atari 400 etc, I'm sorry - no idea, I look forward to someone else posting that because I've got some old games in the loft that I miss - I guess I'm just a big kid. well right after my post here i found the VICE emulator for the Commodore line of computers. this is like my second attempt to get it working. the first was with my mandrake 9.1 setup and i had to depend on wine running a windows inplementation of there product for that... needless to say that was a shot in the wind!
so i go there this time, all setup for a tar.gz file to compile and wella! they have one for *nix boxes however they do not mention anywhere they i'll have any luck with linux.... LOL! i downloaded it and compiled, some of the compiling took forever but it compiled so i said, "ok, what the hey" and it's directions said to run one of the following commands: Code:
