X: using larger resolution for games than default desktop resolution
My 21" monitor crashed & burned sometime ago and I had to resort to my old 17" monitor. This 17" Panasonic TX-D1734F-G will support resolutions up to 1280x1024@60Hz, at least. Well, that's unhealthy for my eyes while I work on desktop, so I use 1024x768@85Hz for that.
But, here comes problem: How it is possible to set up X so that I can use 1024x768 for desktop (not scrollable, not virtual desktop, but I see whole screen area at once) and when launching Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, it would be full screen on larger resolution than desktop.
I have played around with "Virtual" option (see man xorg.conf), but it seems to cap maximum resolution so 1280x1024 game appears in desktop window or just create situation that I have 1024x768 screen "window" on 1280x1024 screen area. Also changing Modes-parameter orders just affect to "window" area I see on larger screen area.
Smaller resolutions like 800x600 work fine in game, but larger resolutions than 1024x768 will create game screen in desktop window. I get desired results for game resolution if I use 1280x1024 for desktop, but it becomes impossible to do some work with 60Hz.
Any working suggestions would be nice. I have thought about second X-server for larger than 1024x768 resolution games, but it seems weird that X can't handle situation like this in any acceptable way. Nothing seems simpler than using one of modes for desktop usage and another configured mode for game. Even Microsoft Windows does that!
I could paste my Xorg.conf here, but there isn't much to see, just Modes under subsection Display:
Fedora Core 3 patched
Nvidia drivers 7174, using GeForce4 Ti 4400
If you're using KDE you can use Resize and Rotate (krandrtray) found in the System Tools menu in FC3. You can then click the resolution you want (hopefully the resolution you need is in the list).
Well, that still requires user intervention, but it's better than nothing. Thanks for a tip. Maybe I can live with this until I get new monitor. :-)
