does sound work with the desktop? if so, try stopping arts (sound daemon for kde) and/or esd (sound daemon for gnome).
if not, then try:

su
[password]
rm /dev/dsp
ln -s /dev/dsp1 /dev/dsp

off to bed now......zzzzzz

Tried those, but no change.

When i start up Enemy territory, i noticed it gives this message:
------- sound initialization -------
/dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
Could not mmap /dev/dsp

something is using /dev/dsp, you need to stop services until you find the culprit - to start with you can disable all event sounds on your desktop.
It is possible to have many apps accessing the sound card at once, something like 'arts et' you'll have to do a search on these forums for the best way to do that.

Sorry I have been on a short vacation. This seems to be a common problem with games using the quake 3 engine.

For Enemy Territory the fix is like this:
echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" >/proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss

For Wolfenstein it should be like this.
echo "wolf.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss

I verified the ET fix does work but I don't have Wolfenstein so I am just guessing.

<EDIT> You must be using alsa-oss emulation for the fix to work.

Anyone having sound problems in Wolfenstein Enemy territory or other games can try the suggestions here. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnemyTerritory I am running Debian Etch, not Ubuntu, but the suggestions work for most distros. If not, change the commands a little bit to fit your distro.
