Wine CS:S DOD:S Slackware 12.2
Greetings,
I have been attempting to get CS:S and DOD:S running using wine for about two weeks now. Having read through all the documentation I can find both here at LQ , LG,and WHQ as well as other sites I can not get the games to start for me. I am not new to Slack but am new to wine. (I think 7.2 as my first version of Slack) So far I have PokerStars working with no tweaking of wine. Wizard101 for my grandson with a few minor tweaks to wine that I found on a ubuntu site and implemented them. Currently my steam setup is as follows. I d/l the steaminstall.msi from steampowered and installed it using wine into a Steam folder I created outside of the Program Files directory because I read that there might be an issue with the word "program" confusing the game. Steam installed and works fine. I used the Steam program to d/l CS:S When I try and run the game either from the desktop icon or launch from the steam program it opens the dialog box "preparing to launch counter strike" then closes in about 5 seconds without any error message. When I use the desktop icon a tab appears in the panel with a rotating hourglass. With Steam as my launching method I get the steam logo in the tab on the panel. I'm using KDE as my wm. Wine version 1.1.27 In the Graphics tab I set the desktop size to 1280x1024 Direct3D Vertex shader Support is None and I unchecked allow pixel shader. Audio tab has ALSA Driver selected Other than those I have changed nothing from the default settings in Wine I updated the Nvidia "driver". I have the disks to load CS:S but can't get past the first disk install. I have tried running the setup.exe outside the /mnt/cdrom but still had a "in use" error that I was able to umount by changing to the /mnt/cdrom directory the back to home, su to root and umount /dev/cdrom/ but can't start disk 2. Sorry If I rambled too much I just wanted to supply as much info that I thought might help me solve this problem I am having. TIA |
best thing to do is install steam and then use steam to download and install the games...

Bogo: Have you tried running the program from the command prompt without Steam? For counter-strike at least, it would normally be located at ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steamapps/[YOUR STEAM ID]/counter-strike\ source/hl2.exe, but in your case, whereever you installed Steam to. You may have to add the steam argument, -game cstrike, at the end. |

I did have to add the -game cstrike at the end. There are a few minor issues with the gameplay, e.g. chat window, and I will have to add the font that steam likes but those are minor issues. My next plan is to install DOD:S and L4D. Again, Thank You for reading and responding "with the proper fix for my issue". |
