Do extra mouse buttons work in games? ie. 5 button mouse

I have used two mice one performs spongily the other appears to have its movements well detected.

I am very interested to know what 'gaming mice' seem to work well under linux os'.

My experience is: (suse 8.2)

* Packard Bell 2 button scroll mouse optical = spongy response, innacurate pointing, all buttons and scroll wheel work well.

*Saitek GM2 (mouse) 2 button, four way hat switch, scroll mouse, ball = very good response, accurate pointing, hat switch is/are joystick 'buttons', buttons work well.

It would be great if linux users (both newbs and linux phd holders) could reccommend gaming hardware.

I google searched and found no such info. Being a newb I am aware that the availability of such info could influence the plug and play crowd into making the switch to a linux os.

Logitech MX 500 or 700 or 310.?
Terratec Mystify Razer 2100 (Boomslang)?
Microsoft mice?

Are they spongy? Are they accurate? Does eveything seem to work correctly? Are they newb proof? etc.

Talking

Hello

Well, i have a Logitech MX 700 and it works fine in my Mandrake 9.1, 9.2 and Gentoo.

I hace to admit that not all the functions of the mouse are available or at least i have not tried to install the special buttons, but talking about the pointer and the movement, i'm very happy with my mouse.

Bye

Logitech Trackman optical trackball...

It's great in both shooters and in Simulations. It's good for Word Processing too.

Right on. I use a Logitech optical wheel mouse (with cord). You don't want to be bothering with constantly changing the batteries for a wireless. If you do get an optical though, make sure you use a non-plastic/non-shiny mouse pad (cloth covered works well).

Microsoft IntelliMouse TrackBall. Works an absolute treat - I hate using mice for FPS games, it is really annoying having to pick up the mouse and move it on the desk just so I can look a little higher or turn a tighter corner. It only has 3 buttons and the scrollybud (3rd button is the scrollybud), but do you need more than that? One button to fire your weapon, one button to fire your secondary weapon or perform functions (open doors, etc), one button to perform functions, and scrollybud to cycle through your weapons. Do you need anything else? Trackballs rock.

I prefer the logitec kind that use the thumb to move the ball, it feels abit mor enatural and lets me use my normal clicking fingers.
