video dirver for quake3 (demo)

I am attempting to run quake3 arena demo on my laptop (Pentium 1.7M radeon 7500 graphics)

I have recently got 3d graphics working so I thought I'ld try the q3demo as a good test.

when I launch the demo I get the error:
...loading libGL.so: QGL_Init: Can't load libGL.so from /etc/ld.so.conf or current dir: libglide2x.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
failed
...loading libMesaVoodooGL.so: QGL_Init: Can't load libMesaVoodooGL.so from /etc/ld.so.conf or current dir: libglide2x.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
failed

I am a little confused as to how to configure the program to work. tried the readme but seems too old, the links are invalid anyway.

could anyone give me a pointer or 2?

thanks.

sorry if this or similar has been posted, but I couldn't find an answer..

same problem

I have exactly the same problem on my Dell Inspiron 4150 (P4 1,8; radeon M 7500) with quake3.
I read different things on the net but nothing helpful. I think we have to install or update drivers or package linked with openGL but I don't know how and which one...

Here is my XF86config-4 :

Section "Module"
Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension
Load "v4l" # Video for Linux
Load "extmod"
Load "type1"
Load "freetype"
Load "glx" # 3D layer
Load "dri" # direct rendering
EndSection

Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection

If somebody can help us!

It's trying to use glide, which is what Voodoo cards use. It's completely seporate to opengl (glx).

Somehow you need to get quake3 to run using glx.

Test glx is running by using "glxgears"

check how libraries are set with "ldd glxgears"

if glxgears doesn't run it's time to read a "get radeon opengl working with X" type of guide

make sure you have your graphics drivers, like nvidia or something, being used for your X, and not VESA or something. Check your "Device" section in the XF86config.

Do you have a link to a web page you can mail me? I'm running a p4 with a radeon on a presario 2500 laptop. I've seen lots of pages and howtos for the amd compaqs/dells, but nothing for the p4 version. (There is a difference).
Thanks!

"p4 version. (There is a difference)"

<- pretty sure that isn't a processor specific version of quake3

I'm not on my box right now, but I think you have to specified a gl driver with something like this:

#q3demo +set r_gldriver /path/to/your/preferred/libGL.so

BTW: I have it run pretty well on my gf4 but somehow I have an annoying fps drop every 2 or 3 seconds, feels like playing online on a 56k lol I get around 90-100 fps, but it drops to maybe 10 fps every 2-3 sec. Any ideas?

do you think you could list the contents of your /etc/ld.so.conf file?

Oh, heh. I was refering to 3d acceleration. I can't, for the life of me, get agpgart to work. I've looked for kernel patches, but most of them are either for an amd pc using kernel version 2.6, or for a kernel version older then what I'm using (2.4.23). I receive the following messages for agpgart:
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 380M
agpgart: unsupported bridge
agpgart: no supported devices found.
Oh, and I'm using slackware 9.1

I realize that this is off topic, but I just needed to gripe. I've had a bad computer day.

When starting linux add:
agp=try_unsupported
to your kernel parameters.
If using lilo add "agp=try_unsupported" to your "append=" section. Then rerun lilo to update. Mine wasn't working and this got it there.

Thanks, I saw the error message in my logs, but I never knew where to put it. I'll try it out. In the meantime, version 2.6.0 of the kernel is out. I Compiled it last night and it seems to be working ok. No acceleration yet, though. I need to change drivers, again. Thanks again for all of your help. I should be able to manage it now.
