UT2K4 DVD edition install?

I just bought the UT2K4 DVD edition for Linux and when I pop the disk in my DVD drive, I get a DVD ROM disk icon on my desktop. I assume Linux is auto mounting the drive but I double click the icon and nothing shows up...
I don't really understand how or what I should do to get this game to install.

Double clicking the DVD ROM icon on the desktop that appears when the DVD ROM is in the drive gives me a empty window that says CD DVD Creator and no folders visable.

Please help.

I have the UT2k4 ECE dvd. I use the terminal to install it, never tried by clicking on the installer itself. I see you are using FC3, all you need or should need to do is open a terminal cd to the dvd drive, in my case /media/cdrecorder as I use FC3 x86-64 on one of my partitions. :)

Then you just need to sh setup.sh I think. There should be a .sh file on the dvd similar to the setup.sh if i remember correctly. If using the x86-64 version it will install the 64bit version of UT2k4 and if using the 32bit version it will install the 32bit one. If you are running the 64bit FC3 and want the 32bit version of UT2k4 type linux32 sh setup.sh

Much easier to me to do it with the terminal than to double click the icon. It might help this way also with the problem you are having with the gui side of things.

I guess I don't know once in terminal what to do...I know how to become root but I don't know the command to mount or if I need to mount my one and only DVD/CD ROM drive on Linux. Can you walk me through this please?

Check this link, very last post has a UT2k4 How-to on it.

http://www.easylinuxguide.com/index....3d9feca2c2978d

It doesn't take into account the different name that FC3 uses. It uses the standard /mnt/cd instead of the /media/cdrecorder that FC3 uses.
If you have any questions after reading that How-to let me know and I can clarify further if needed. :)

carlosinfl 02-19-2005 08:28 PM

ok, here is what happens. I followed the link as it is very simple but I am still having a problem for somereason.

Code:

[root@server cdrecorder]# ls
AutoRun.inf  CD1  CD2  CD3  CD4  CD5  CD6  linux-installer.sh  Setup.exe
[root@server cdrecorder]# sh linux-installer.sh
Copying to a temporary location...
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing Unreal Tournament 2004 for GNU/Linux 3186......................................................................

You can see I became root and then mounted the DVD ROM and was able to browse all the files. Then I told it to run the installer. From here I get a nice little GUI window that asks me some default settings questions and I leave all default and run the install. *Here is where I get this "Choice Requested" window on Linux that tells me, "Please mount the Unreal T. Play desk CDROM, choose YES to rety or NO to cax."

I am using the DVD version which has all 6 disks on it as you can see from my "ls" display. When I press yes, it just keeps asking the same question over and over...

Why wont it read this dir (CD1) from the DVD drive? What do I need to do?

MNKyDeth 02-19-2005 08:51 PM

Very odd, I am not sure why it is doing this to you. :/

The only thing I can think of to try is to copy the entire dvd to your hard drive and try installing it that way.

as user in your /home/(username)/ directory
mkdir ut2004
cp -R /media/cdrecorder/* /home/(username)/ut2004/

Then enter the ut2004 directory and then su
Then sh linux-setup.sh

See if that works, I would hope so, as like I said, I really don't know why it won't install normally from the dvd. :/

carlosinfl 02-19-2005 10:26 PM

I copied all the files to a dir * / home / carlos / UT2K4.

Then once all files were done being copied to that directory, I had to become root and run the installer. I got the same thing. After I entered the CD key and selected where to install the game, it would keep telling me to mount the disk labaled "Play Disk". It would not take yes for an answer. I am installing this as root so I know I have permission to mount and do pretty much anything. I saw this in my terminal session and I think every time it told me to insert the play disk and press YES, it wrote this in my terminal window. Could this be the problem?

Code:

mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
Mounted device /dev/hdc
Unmounting device /dev/hdc
umount: /media/cdrecorder: device is busy
umount: /media/cdrecorder: device is busy

I think that is normal actually. All you need is read access though wich is says your getting.

I am almost thinking you have the installer script for the cd-rom version of the game on your dvd. Hence the reason it is asking you for the 1st cd instead of just installing like normal. I think you should post exectly what version of the UT2k4 dvd you have so someone can upload a working dvd installer for you.
To my knowledge there are 3 different dvd's of UT2k4. There is the original one, the special edition and the editors choice edition. Tell us wich one you have and hopefully someone could upload a linux-installer.sh file that will or should work for ya.

That's my last idea, I'll keep thinking on how to fix this but am running low in the idea department. :/

carlosinfl 02-19-2005 11:07 PM

Mine is just the 2 disk DVD edition. Should I take this back to the store and get the ECE. I really don't know why the installers would be different but its driving me nuts and I for some reason think it is just something I am missing. I have never used the DVD to install a game before and this was my 1st attempt and its driving me crazy. Any thoughts?

MNKyDeth 02-19-2005 11:37 PM

I really don't know about taking it back, I guess that decision is upto you.

I was looking at the installer I have and it is 28.1MB, the linux-installer.sh file.
The only part I can tell that might be different is it references a version file, MD5sum and where to find the dvd drive.

It might be simple enough to copy just the linux-installer.sh to your hard drive open it with a program like vi, nano or even gedit in gnome and change the part of the installer to point to say dvd instead of cd. This is just grabbing at wild straws now though. As in the code it should tell the installer to ask for the cd's or where to look in the dvd to install properly.

It might be worthwhile to go over to icculus.org and see if they have any ut2004 installers. Ryan "icculus" Gordon is the one that did the Linux port for Epic so it might be beneficial to email him or someone from the icculus.org site to see what they have to say.

Ok, I threw the game in my HP notebook also running Fedora Core 3 but an older kernel 2.6.9. It did the same thing so I am thinking the problem is Fedora Core since it automounts the drive.
I don't think the problem is the game or the installer file. I know its not my system because I have tested this on another Linux system.

It's so wierd! Everything starts off good untill after I enter my CDKEY. Then it starts installing for 1.5 secs and then BAM!!!...Please MOUNT the disk labeled Play Disk. Why would Fedora keep doing this if the disk is already mounted?

carlosinfl 02-21-2005 10:39 PM

I found this thread which is identical to my problem!
