UT2004 Missing Symbols - Crashes

Hey everybody, I have tried all day long to fix this problem, I am new Linux user and I am using Mandrake 10 with the latest ATI driver. I played the UT2004 demo and it worked perfectly earlier today, so then I installed the full version using my 6 cd set. So I get it installed, go to run it, and it has give me this error no matter what ive tried.

[jwoair23@localhost ut2004]$ ./ut2004
Missing symbols - aborting.

History:

Exiting due to error
[jwoair23@localhost ut2004]$

It shows the splash screen, then that error right after. If I use the -software switch though it works, albeit horribly slow. What in the world is wrong? The demo ran great, but for the life of me I can't get this to work, if you help I will be forever grateful!

I plan on becoming an active member of the community, so don't think I am just asking a question and leaving, I am new to Linux and just trying to figure it all out! Thanks for any help! :D

well, from what happens with it working with SR (software rendering), its probably your ati drivers. try downgrading to something like 3.2.8.

I should try older drivers? Where can I find them, I've looked on ATI's website and google but havent found them, and I am hesitant to downgrade driver versions when they are so new?

If you can't find them, private message me with your e-mail and I can send you it. I have version 3.1 or something like that and my UT2004 runs fine.

Well I found the 3.2 drivers and uninstalled my old ones, installed these ones exactly how I did the others, and the opengl is using the mesa drivers, not the ATI ones. sigh. Any other suggestions? This is so frustrating.

Hi,
@jwoair23 I had exactly the same problem - missing symbols in ut2004 full while I could play ut2004 demo (even if I could play it far away from perfectly, but at least it started). And it seems like it's quite a rare problem - haven't found any other people getting the same error.

I bought an ATI Radeon 9600 XT and only had problems with it. In ut2004 Demo I had constant 15 fps in onslaught. I tried to get better performance and getting ut2004 to run for 4 days now - with no luck. Now I installed my "old" GeForce TI 4200. The Installation took me 10 minutes and I get about 40 fps in onslaught from UT2004 Demo. But I could hardly believe it - UT 2004 full is running too.

I'm going to sell my Radeon now and buy a new GeForce.

ATI and Linux at the moment <- no thanks (imho bad drivers, bad performance, no 64bit support and so on).

I'm sorry I can't help you fix your problem, but at least you know now, you're not the only one, and it must be the Radeon.

Maybe my configuration may help to figure out, what's the similarity with our problem:

AMD Athlon64 3000+
MSI K8T NEO-FIS2R
1 GB Kingston DDR 400MHz RAM
Asus A9600XT/TVD 128 MB RAM

Mandrake 10.0 Community (not the 64bit Beta for now)

I tried ATI 3.2.8 and 3.7.6 drivers - with both the same.

Good luck in solving the problem...

PS: sorry for my english :)

Huh...

I have the same problem:
P4 1.8 gHz
512MB PC2100 DDRRAM
160GB HD
Mandrake Linux 10.0 Community
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

$ut2004
Missing symbols - aborting.

History:

Exiting due to error.

Interesting how we're all running ML10.0 Community... hmm...

P.S. I'm a Linux newbie (been using it for 2-3 weeks) so don't be too harsh

xodustrance 04-14-2004 01:48 PM

mandy 9.2 - ati 9800, same problem

mtyrce 04-14-2004 05:31 PM

Micro420,

Can you please send me the drivers you have? I would PM you but it won't let me, I guess you disabled PM's or something.

My email is mtyrce [at] yahoo [dot ca]

Thanks!

Micro420 04-15-2004 04:01 PM

That is weird because my UT2004 (Full retail version) works fine. My specs:

ATI 9700 Pro w/ 3.2 drivers or whatever. I'm at work so I don't know the exact driver version
Mandrake 9.1
Creative Audigy sound card
generic optical mouse
KDE 3.1
Pentium 4 2.53 GHz
PC 2100 DDR RAM

mtyrce 04-15-2004 04:24 PM

Err...

Well then maybe...

Everyone who's using a 2.6 kernel raise your hand!

(raises hand)

derfunkenstein 04-15-2004 05:55 PM

Same problem here, as well, and guess what: I'm using a 2.6 kernel...2.6.3-mdk to be exact. I'm on Mandrake 10 community with this system:

Athlon XP 2700+
MSI KT6V KT600 board
512MB PC3200
Radeon 9800 Pro
etc etc etc

xodustrance 04-15-2004 09:27 PM

still on 9.2, 2.4.22
:-P

Thanks!

I e-mailed you the driver 3.2.5

But you're a yahoo e-mail address and the file is 4.25 MB. It might not go through. If not, you'll have to give me a private e-mail account that can accept big attachment files.

mtyrce 04-16-2004 04:08 PM

Yeah, it didn't come through...

Can you please send it to neoflame [at] rogers [dot com] then?

Sorry to cause you so much trouble :(
