What jwoair23 and Stack wrote should work fine. I'll layout what I did in a little more detail. Keep in mind that I'm using Slack which does not try to auto mount the cd rom. Your mileage may vary. Up to the point of install you can handle file moving by drag and drop if the console method of moving files seems a bit much. It really is easy. I'm doing this all as root. You can do all the prep work as a normal user. Then only thing to do as root is install. Fewer headaches.

You issue a command by opening a terminal/console window.

in the console enter the command:

su

Then give your root account password.

Then change directory to the cdrom where the UT2K4 cd is loaded. At this point the CD device should be mounted. For my box the command is:

cd /mnt/cdrom

OR

cd /dev/cdrom

either works fine

If you have a cd writer then the command might be

cd /mnt/scd0

If in doubt and you have a CDROM Icon on your desktop just right click and choose properties. You will find the exact mount location and device name.

Then copy the linux installer to a temp location on your HD. The command for me is:

cp linux-installer.sh /home/wingnut/tmp

Now change locations to where you copied the installer. For me it would be:

cd /home/wingnut/tmp

You can verify the contents of that directory by issuing the command:

ls

Now unmount the cdrom. For me it looks like

umount /dev/cdrom

now (as root) install. While in the same directory as the newly copied installer issue the console command:

./linux-installer.sh

OR

sh linux-installer.sh

After a few seconds you will see the installer do its thing.

The trick is to not allow the cd's to be mounted by Linux. If you are using a distro (mandrake, Suse.... etc) that auto mounts the CD simply unmount by either right clicking the CD icon and choosing "unmount" or by opening a second console and issuing the umount /dev/cdrom command.

This must be done each time you swap cd's. When you swap cds mearly use the eject button on the cdrom and make sure the cd is completely spun up (light stops flashing) before clicking the "yes" box. It was much easy under Slack as it does not auto mount the CDROM device.

Upon successful installation I removed ALL cd's and as normal user typed the console command

./ut2004 (someone correct if thats the wrong syntax)

And then I started killing people.

The syntax is wrong:
You would only run ./ut2004 if ut2004 was in your current directory, which I doubt it is
Running "ut2004" from a terminal should launche UT2004 just fine (without quotes offcourse)

I still can't get it to install though, installer fails on some file. too bad I paid for this thing

UZ2: Failed to fully write [/usr/local/games/ut2004//StaticMeshes/AW-PhysicMeshes.usx.

./status.sh: line 273: 1941 Aborted "$setup "$@"
Signal caught, cleaning up

Then it drops me back to a terminal. I did not edit this script or anything, just plain trying to run it by doing a:
sh linux-installer.sh
I also tried ./linux-installer.sh
Both fail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Greetings,

Marno

I had the same error but on a different file. It turns out that the ide-scsi emulation was the culprit. I recompiled the kernel (2.6.6) without it and I was able to install without incident.

Hey Mormegil, how might I go about recompiling my kernel (2.4.22-1.2115.nptl) with out ide-scsi emulation? Thanks.

Nevermind, I will make a fresh post, thanks!

I have exactly the same error i.e.:
Quote:
creak@dolmen:~$ sh linux-installer.sh
Copying to a temporary location...
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing Unreal Tournament 2004 for GNU/Linux 3186......................................................................

UZ2: Failed to fully write [/home/creak/ut2004/Sounds/IntroSounds.uax]!
./setup.sh: line 148: 5791 Abandon "$setup" "$@"
It's just in french now
I tried a lot of way to install it, i just can't install it on the /usr directory coz i don't have the space for it, but i tried to install the game as root on my home directory... but still the same error!
I just doesn't recompiled my kernel, it's not a problem for me but for my computer... After recompiling, i loose the good drivers for my ide chipset and i don't know what it is because i have a too much recent hardware components (amd64 3500+, pci-express, nVidia 6600) so that the output of my lspci give me mainly "Unknown device":

So here i am asking for help because i can't play ut2004 on my favorite OS...
Does someone has any idea, or knows which driver i have to install in my kernel in order to have the good driver for the ide chipset ?
I thought it was due to the automounting feature in gnome, but apparently not...

PS: don't buy pci-express or amd64 now...

I had same problems but I manage to install ut2004 anyway using a simple nice command wich is :
nice ./linux-installer.sh
I have about same HW, NForce4 SLI - A64 3500+ - 6800 GT
I guess there is something broken when intensive I/O are processed on the SATA but until the pbm is resolved ...

I don't have SATA, but it's really possible that the problem is the same on IDE
