Ubuntu exits mysteriously.

If I try to play games like gl-117 or Vega Strike on my Ubuntu, after about 2 minutes of playing, the program will exit. Afterwards, the screen will seem to become too big for my monitor, and I have to scroll down by moving my cursor in the direction I want to go.
Has this happened to anyone else and how do I fix it? Similar things have happened with most of the games on my computer, and I don't want to have to buy Windows to play games.

Are these native Linux games? How did you install them? or

Are they Windows games? Which WCL platform are you using?

Do you have an nVidia or ATI video card, and are the drivers properly installed?

Too many questions to try to guess...

Yes, they are native Linux games.
I installed them via Synaptic Package Manager.

We need to know your hardware and drivers- If 3D and/or hardware acceleration isn't supported, games won't play and will cause system instability or crashes.

I assume you are running the games in full screen mode? If so, this highjacks the screen away from the current Desktop and if the application fails 'uncleanly', then you can get left in the situation you state. Personally I tend to run games in Windowed mode, partly for this reason but it should reset on an XWindows restart i.e. CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE or logon/logoff.

It does have 3D abilities apparently but according to this (admittedly rather old) thread, it is not very stable:

If you want to play 3D games, you really (if your hardware allows it) ought to by either an NVidia or ATI graphics card.

Pretty much all ATI and Nvidia cards are now supported very well under Linux - I would buy what you can afford.

Note though, and it depends on how you view the Open issue, Nividia drivers are closed source (but very good) but I believe there are open source drivers for ATI cards (however I do not use ATI after having been burnt by them in the bad old days of early XOrg).
