The Simpsons "Springfield" public beta map for Enemy Territory - released!

The Simpsons "Springfield" public beta map for Enemy Territory - released!!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now before I post links to the information on where to d/l this map, I have some questions:

1) Have you played this map yet? If so, how do you like it?
2) How well does this map perform on your system?
3) How well does this map perform on-line with other players?

Many of us have been waiting for this map to be released since.. I don't know.. the beginning of this year or around the end of last year.. and while this is only a public beta at least it's something!! :) I think it's wicked cool! :) I'm not the author of this map nor did I have anything to do with making it but I think it's awesome so I'd like to discuss it here.

Okay now here are the links:

Announcement thread on the Splashdamage.com forums

Other announcement thread from the large discussion on this map.

Edit 12-12-2004: As stated later in this thread, the map author's homepage seems to be down, as well as the download link listed in this post. However, you can directly download this Springfield map here. I've removed broken links in this post because they're no longer useful.

Map author's homepage ( link removed because it's no longer working - removed other broken links from this post)

Here's an important part from the readme for those who are too lazy to read it:

"This map needs more resources than the original Enemy Territory maps. So you have to give the game more RAM. Otherwise you get the "hunc_allocate failed at xxxxx" error. So start the game, open the console" "type "/set com_hunkmegs 90" and press enter. After restarting the game and it should work. If you still get the error, try higher numbers than "90". (quote taken from the README file by Maggumaster included with the public beta map)

Check out these screenshots:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

I don't know who took those screenshots but I'm going to take some myself and post links to them soon so even those who may not play Enemy Territory may be inspired to install it. :) Edit: and of course once you extract the .rar archive you should copy the .pk3 file to your .etwolf/etmain directory for the map (so it will load) when you host a game and select the map to try it yourself in single player mode or if you notice someone else online running it and join their game.

Very nice looking, but I don't see the fun in playing ET in Springfield. It takes out the feel and realism of WW2.

I would much prefer some really big 64 Player Maps, or maybe a couple of new but really cool even game maps. Maybe dual objective where either team could win by completing the objectives. More axis objective maps would be nice as well, so far theres only really Caen that stands out, and possibly some of the X-Labs scenarios.

I would very much also like that. you should post this at the Enemy Territory forums so that people can make the maps for this.

When I played it I thought something like, "Wow! this looks amazing! It's more detailed than any other map for ET I've seen! Damn this looks cool!" But when I played it it felt very odd walking around with the weapons, sounds, and soldier voices normally found in ET in a cartoonish map. I feel the map has great potential if the author goes ahead and makes it into a mod: adding new sounds, changing the look of the soldiers and their weapons to that of characters/objects from The Simpsons. The map should also be bigger and I could name off other improvements that should be made but won't here as it wouldn't make a difference.

Well I can't speak for the author of the map, but I wouldn't guess he/she was going for a WW2 "feel" when they made the Springfield map.

I didn't make the map. Please see the link to the map author's homepage in my initial post to this thread. From there you should find contact information on his website.

Question

Does anyone know what has happened to the development of this Springfield map?

The map author's homepage seems to be down, as well as the download links.

Hooray, I'm answering my own question.

Well, I found a direct download link to the Springfield map, finally, at new-etmaps.de, but I've had no luck in finding any homepage for the map's author, and I've been too lazy to post on the Splash Damage thread regarding this map. Well, anyway, at least I found a download link again. It's probably the most detailed map out there for Enemy Territory. Enjoy.

And new-etmaps.de has hundreds of maps for download for Enemy Territory. Very nice.
