Steam FIX

For all you people who can't play Steam since the latest update...there IS a solution!

I found this thread at Transgaming.org http://www.transgaming.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=390

Basically:
Quote:

First, you need to dig up the DLL msvcr70.dll and put it into c_drive/windows/system32. I got mine from my BF 1942 installation. This is needed because CSERHelper.dll needs it. For what, I dunno.

Next you need to get shdocw.dll and put it into c_drive/windows/system32. I got mine from my windows 98 installation (2179072 bytes).
Edit your config and add this:

"shdocvw" = "builtin"

Fire up steam, pick your game and ensure that you can get all the way to the splash screen (it will quit).

Now quit steam and kill wine/wineserver off.

Edit config again and switch it to:

"shdocvw" = "native, builtin"

Steam should now work.
Worked for me and i use Cedega (although mouse sticky problem is still there)

DLLs can be grabbed from here

Thanks for sharing the info! I'll try it later when I get home.

I followed the instructions, but what do you mean by "kill wine/wineserver off."?
I'm a noob to cedega. I ran a ps -ef|grep wine and killed all the pids I could, but I noticed wineserver never went away.
I tried to run Steam anyways and still got the blank splash & crash.

I haven't tried it (haven't had time), but I suspect that you could either press CTRL + ESC and kill it there, or in konsole, just type ps -A and kill #

the correct name for the second dll is shdocvw.dll. I'm just trying the fix now

edit: I had no luck. At the point where steam should work i get an error dialog.

Steam.exe (Main Exception): Win32
Structured Exception at 444AFEFC: Attempt
to read from virtual address 1145765628
without appropriate access rights.

I'm running winex, as user "tom".

I changed hardward (from a Dell GX250 to a 350), so I had to reinstall FC2, reinstall Cedega, and when I reinstalled Steam and followed the instructions it worked.

The fix worked for me!

**make sure you edit the CORRECT config file. I have Wine, WineX, and Cedega and it was confusing which was the correct one. Type locate cedega in your konsole and it should tell you where Cedega is installed.

Well, it almost works for me. My FPS kinda suck and in-game text is almost illegible, anyone else have that problem? Also, I can't get DoD to download. It just sits at "Updating Day of Defeat" and doesn't do anything.

Text is also a little weird in the game, but it's legible.
FPS is fine for me. I'm playing in OpenGL mode on 1024x768.

Is this solution for the below error?

Nope, it's for the error where CS crashes out when you start it.

Is steam working on wine now?

I have read how some people can get steam working and then it stops after the updates. My question is as of this date has any one got it to work and if so how?
