Just an FYI, they are selling it at $34.99 right now. That's cheaper than most you find for sale on ebay. I don't know what Valve's shipping charges are though. I may get one, at this price I can sell it and not lose too much money if I don't like it.
I have never ordered hardware on Steam, how does their shipping work? Do they charge a flat rate or does it depend on location? The sale is also on amazon too.

I purchased it from the Steam Store for the UK so I am not sure how these things vary. The shipping was a lot of money (about £6 I seem to recall) but I still saved a little on the prices I have seen up to now.
As ever, if you're careful I dare say you may get one cheaper but I was considering one anyhow so decided "What the hell?"!
I'll be interested how long it takes to deliver though as if I'd have ordered on Amazon prime I would likely have it by now but the Amazon prices were about £60 or more (I paid ~£35 including postage).

That's not bad at all. Have heard good things about it. Most of the negative reviews I read were from people that just couldn't wrap their xbox or ps3 controller habits around this one. The community also provides settings for all the different games so that makes it easier to set it up. Just noticed amazon says "ships in 3 to 5 weeks".

It's a lot compared to shipping with a majority of Amazon purchases and when the dollar price of a Steam Controller is taken into account it seems expensive. I agree that for what it is it should be a decent price.
I'll also be interested in how it works without Steam running for things like general desktop use, Minecraft and Second Life.
I got to try a Steam Controller for two weeks, borrowing it from a friend who purchased one while in the States. I'm in NZ right now.
It's a really nice controller, and the community configs are really convenient. Plug-n-play with SteamOS.
I'll definitely be purchasing one when I'm in the states next; but I won't be purchasing online, as it doesn't appear in the Steam store in NZ region, and ordering it would mean I had to deal with import tax and overseas shipping.

Just a warning in case anybody come across this -- the Steam Controller does not work under Linux for anything but Steam purchased games. I consider myself ripped-off and am glad I haven't spent much on Steam games as I'm not going to pay another penny to Valve again since they see fit to use Linux but not even make the controller useful under it. Shameful behaviour from a company which purports to respect Linux.

It seems I was slightly premature in my assessment -- the Steam Controller does work as a general-purpose controller under Linux as long as Steam itself is running. The controller can then be set up in various (literally thousands of) configurations.
I also managed to use the controller in Minecraft and Second Life by adding them to Steam.
So, all in all I'm still frustrated that I need to run Steam to use it but at least it can be used for more than just Steam games.
As to how good a controller it is -- it's so weird to me it's likely to take me weeks or even months if I can force myself to use it, then I'll have to work out how I want it set up for each game.
I'm glad I got it a little cheaper, it's perhaps worth what I paid for it to me.
It is an interesting device. The haptics had me fooled when I first powered mine up. I didn't realize that the right pad was reacting to my touch. I thought I was flexing the plastic of the controller itself. I was surprised to discover that the left and right pads are touch sensitive.
I noticed that Steam has to be run in BPM(Big Picture Mode) to setup the controller.
I have had my own set of problems due to other issues. But there is, I think, three different stand alone drivers to use the controller with out Steam. If you're interested, check on github.
I think it is a high quality controller. But it will take time for support to show up in more games.
I never got the daisy wheel keyboard to appear so that seems broken. Come to think of it I don't think I got any keyboard to appear.
And I could not make it work on a 4.6.x kernel and had to go back to a previous kernel.
The haptics make a slight sound and the controller also produces sounds which are configurable.
