Sound problem with "alsamixer" or "alsaconf" or sth else maybe...

Hello, i'm quite new to linux so plz be patient and try to explain as simple as possible ;)

Problem is: I have installed sound card and alsa driver, soft etc. All test show that my sound card is detected correctly:

Vendor: Intel Corp.
Model: 82801EB AC'97 Audio
Module: snd-intel8x0

But I didn't hear any sound. I found out that all channels might be muted by default and indeed ALSAMIXER was showing all channels "off".
After running ALSACONF, all seemed fixed, ALSAMIXER showed unlocked channels with some values, and I COULD hear music.... but ONLY when alsamixer was running. When i quit alsamixer, all settings seem to be reset and forgotten, speakers are mute, no sound. I have to run alsaconf again, and again, and again..... so....
What's going on? What file is responsible for this? Can I set this manually somehow? Please help! I need to hear :) :) :) :)
Mikuda.

Have you tried using a different mixer? I use alsamixer myself, but it's not working perfect with me either; after a logout, the values resets.

try using aumix, setting the settings as you see fit, and then saving, maybe thatll help... or, you could edit /etc/asound.state.

Well, as I said I'm not to good in linux and its applications yet. Mostly console applications are hard for me. But anyway, I'm not even sure if it's alsamixer or alsaconf problem.

did you try aumix? its a gui application, just type
aumix
in the console and youll get a friendly interface.
