I see that there is an open-source SimCity 3000, and am going to try it when I have the time; but has anyone made an open-source SiMCity 2000? I had a great deal of fun for years playing that game, and was satisfied with its openness level of complexity. I never tried 3000 or newer.
Here you will get the full listing (check "See also").
BUT:
Big news: Cities Skylines will launch in 2015 Q1, which is supposed to be definitely more butterfly-effect-like than at least the latest SimCity 5 (which in my personal opinion is just extremely horrible if you want to use it to look at cause/effect relationships).
It is supposed to be available for Linux.
There are at least 3 videos in Youtube demoing parts of the game.
I'm looking forward to it as I was extremely disappointed by the latest SC5.

I haven't heard of any open source version of Sim City 3000. I have heard of the open source version of Sim City called Micropolis. There is a Linux version of Sim City 3000 that was done by Loki Games, but that wasn't open source. As for Sim City 2000, it would be nice if there was an open source clone of it.
I've tried the Windows port of Lin-city NG some years ago. The graphics is all that is similar to Sim City 2000. The game play is very different though. I could never figure out how to get out of the horse and buggy era and into the modern era. One of these days I'll compile it on my Slackware system.
Distribution: Ubuntu 11.4,DD-WRT micro plus ssh,lfs-6.6,Fedora 15,Fedora 16
