SDL Quake2 Sound initializtion error

I loaded quake2-r0.15-io1 on my Fedora Core system. So far it's working ok in the glX version, but the sound is low quality no matter what. When I try to load SDL version from the provided script it loads fine. However, when I connect to a server running a mod or try to switch to a local mod, I get this:

]set game weapons
using /home/njreist/.quake2/weapons/ for writing

------- sound initialization -------
Received signal 11, exiting...

It would lead me to believe it's dying on sound server restart. I was wondering what I can do to either get the low quality issue resolved, or the restart issue resolved.

Any help is much appreciated.
