Quakeworld video mode issues

I am running the latest version of linux quakeworld on 2 computers. On one computer, whenever i go over video mode 8 the screen goes all wierd like an old monitor who's refresh rate is to high. On the other computer, all modes UNDER 8 do wierd things like paralell displays of the same thing on one monitor and the aformentioned wierdness. Any suggestions?
