Quake3 and Doom3 - no sound on Fedora Core 3

Hello,
This question has been asked over and over, I guess. I've read all the posts and tried everything. But the damn thing won't work.

I got AMD64 running Fedora Core 3 on VIA chipset with nVidia GeForce FX 5200. I've downloaded and installed the Geforce drivers. I've installed Quake 3 Arena and Doom 3 - actually, I've copied the linux binaries to my windows folders and running them directly. The games work fine but the sound wouldn't. Here's what quake says:

Code:

------- sound initialization -------
GETOSPACE: Invalid argument
Um, can't do GETOSPACE?
------------------------------------

Here's Doom output:

Code:

----------- OSS Sound Initialization -----------
opened sound device '/dev/dsp'
/dev/dsp - bit rate: 16, channels: 2, frequency: 44100
WARNING: ioctl SNDCTL_DSP_GETOSPACE failed

close sound device
WARNING: sound subsystem disabled

------------------------------------------------

How can I make the sound work? If I can make it work, it would totally remove any need to boot my pc to winblows.

edit: sound card is onboard AC97 and uses snd-via82xx driver. Sound works perfectly fine.

Fedora uses ALSA by default if i'm not mistaken. You should proble recompile the kernel and remove ALSA, then compile ALSA from source and load the modules at start up.

Edit: O almost forgot, make sure to get the alsa driver, lib, oss and utils source from www.alsa-project.org. I find that it works better if you make your own ALSA with the OSS modules.

hi guys i got Pentium-4 520/2.8GHZ, on intel D915GAV desktop board with 384 MB RAM running Fedora core 4, i've downloaded and installed latest video drivers and alsa drivers. i have installed doom3 version 1.3, i'm experiencing very slow game performance, the sound works, the display is set to 1024x768 at 24 bits depth. anyone knows how to make the game work fast pls help me

Chuong 04-02-2006 10:54 AM

Yes gopi.d,

I've an idea, you need more RAMs I believe.

384 MB RAM is not enough to run Doom 3 smoothly I think. It is a very intensive game, and it's dodgy, to me anyways.

But if you want to waste $50 for more RAMs just to play Doom 3, go ahead. I suppose the RAMs won't go to waste though. Quake III will be very smooth if you have 1 GB RAM.

Ok, now I have the same problem what NexusGS has.

My Quake III is running like a gem on Fedora Core 4. Except the mouse ain't responding to me fully. I can shoot bullets and stuff, and I suppose I can turn my character using the keyboard's arrow keys, but I can't turn my character with the mouse.

Hope this question gets answered soon!

I'm a complete Linux illiterate, and I don't know how to use it besides double clicking on my computers and the basic copy and paste files. Anybody can show us how to fix the mouse problem would be greatly appreciated (basic step by step if possible).

Thanking you in advance,

Chuong.

Hold on mate, i have a sollution for ur problems so dont recompile ur kernel or buy extra ram or anything !!!
predator.hawk was right abt the ALSA thing, i had the same problem. all i did was when i started the game in console i added extra commands. for example for Doom3 i did :
Quote:

#doom3 set s_driver oss
its all in a tutorial i wrote for Doom3 here : http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=417308
Let me know if it helps you.

gopi.d 04-07-2006 02:31 AM

thanks WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot your tip worked for audio on doom3 but there's a bit problem in my system running doom3, the video quality is poor and the game creeps, i had never experienced any problem with my system on windowsXP. my system config is fair enough to run doom3 and quake3 on windowsXP so why can't it work good on linux my confusion is the system appears to run faster in Fedora core4 than in windows and the video is good too while playing dvds and the xwindow works at resolutions which i can never imagine in windowsXP. i can't find a solution for this so i decided to try it on Fedora core 5 and started downloading it. and moreover there is a note in doom3 official web site saying "doom3 hitching on 2.6.10 kernel" and offers a patch for that pls check it and tell me how to install the patch.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot 04-07-2006 06:17 PM

i would not recomend using Fedora core 5 for games........yet. i too tried to install it but the kernel in FC5 has a bug and i couldnt install my Nvidia drivers  so hold off FC5 for a while, FC4 should be good enough. on the doom3 FAQ it says theres a problem with the 2.6.9kernel but i think FC4 is currently much higher than that aint it ? try doing "yum update" if you havnt updated your kernel because im sure thats not the problem afterall i ran the game smoothly a month ago. mayby the game has just put the settings too high, start from minimum and work your way up. on my comp doom3 actually ran much faster on FC4 than on XP

not related to the issue i see ur from india. whick city exactly, if u dont mind my asking. ive lived in bombay, delhi and prety much grew up in srinagar and poona. its great to see Linux users from india :D

384MB is a bit low to be playing it at 1024x768 mate. try setting to 640x480 on medium settings and work ur way upwards then. also, let us know what sort of graphics card u have, that coule explain a lot abt the slow performance.

another fellow indian eh !! wow, dint know so many ppl back home played doom3

ok Chuong and NexusGS, i found this on a debian forum, hope it helps.

Well, just in case someone else runs across the problem, updating from
the 1.32 point release to the 1.32b point release fixed the problem.
1.32b is kind of hard to find though, so look in
ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/linux

Try the following command to launch the game with OSS sound instead, dont know f it will work for Q3 though, worked for Doom3.
Quote:

#doom3 set s_driver oss
And mate, why on earth are u still usig FC2 ?? FC5 is already out man! My 1st suggestion would be that u upgrade, say to FC4 and then continue.

kamowa 04-08-2006 06:55 PM

I dont upgrade because I like FC2, it serves my needs. I tried that things for Doom 3 for quake 3 it didnt work.

Chuong 04-09-2006 12:15 AM

I've fixed my mouse problem and sound problem already, thanks guys.

Well, you need to do something rather than just installing the Alsa driver. I went to the creative live (my sound card) site and looked for Linux sound drivers.

I installed the Alsa driver and it fixed it.

They teach you how to install it there too.

You have to download this file then type something like:

chmod x+a alsa driver something something something, I can't remember.

I don't think I can post any URL until I have posted at least three.

As for the mouse, downloading the Linux Point Release 1.32b-2 fixed it instantly. You can download it from world wide web dot planetquake3 dot net

^_^

Hope that helps.
