quake sound problem

I finally got quake working on my Mandriva 2007 setup and can play it perfectly except there is no sound. I am not getting any errors but when i enter "soundinfo" into the quake console it says "sound system not started". It happens both with tyr-quake and glquake. /dev/dsp is chmodded to 777, i tried playing as root and no joy either. I can listen to mp3s no problem so the sound card works. It is a Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop with intel sound and it is using the hda driver. lsmod tells me the driver is loaded so i don't know what the hell is going on. alsa mixer is saying the volume is at 77% too so I just don't know. ANy help will be greatly appreciated - thanks

No idea what could be happening, but in this situation I would look at commandline options, to see if you can specify which sound system to use... like ALSA or OSS. Trying those might help.

I got it working finally. If anyone else has the same problem and wants to know how to fix it then as root, type this into the shell

echo "glquake 0 0 direct" >/proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
echo "glquake 0 0 disable" >/proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss

I don't know what it does but it works perfectly. Thanks
