Quake III and Ut2004 problems

Here is the problem. I have just recently decided to try out linux. I had redhat pro 9 so i decided to just try this out. Anyway I love the system over all but i can not play any games that i have installed. I will start with the error i get from quake III.

on load this is what i get
7126 files in pk3 files
execing default.cfg
execing q3config.cfg
execing autoexec.cfg
Hunk_Clear: reset the hunk ok

------- Input Initialization -------
Joystick is not active.

...loading libGL.so.1: Initializing OpenGL display
...setting mode 3: 640 480
Error couldn't open the X display
...WARNING: could not set the given mode (3)

For one thing i dont even know how to switch mode 3 to any other mode. But that should not even matter. I cannot even get the game to run I have installed the new nvidia patch for the game and my Xf86conf file looks like this

Are you trying to run quake3 as a different user than is running X? and you do have X running right? that can't connect to server looks like X is refusing you bc of being a different user.
