I don't know if somebody has noticed this difference:
On windows when I played Quake II the opengl graphics were decent. For example smoke comming from grenades or grenade launcher looks like a bunch of grey dots that follow the path of the grenade. The same happens with the rail gun or rocket launcher.
On Linux, using the loki installer the graphics look a lot better, the smoke looks like real smoke, the lightning of the railgun looks solid.
My problem comes in the performance aspect. I don't mind the the outdated graphics of the windows version because I get constantly good performance. When I play on Linux however the performance drops when there is a lot of action.
I'm using the same cd to install the game on both OS's. Can somebody tell me how to change the settings on Linux so that it looks like the classic windows version. Please don't tell me to play it on windows because I want to change completely to linux
just lower your settings through the game. i never paid that much attention to be honest. i do notice that with quake3 arena i can't find the servers i play on on my windows machine. same cd for both windows and linux. it's as if linux quake only sees linux quake and vice versa. oh well, still playing with it and learning too.
Well, I tried to lower the visuals and the only option that I see that I can lower is the texture. I tried it and it only made the walls and the characters look plain, but the special effects were there.
Is it something in the config file thatI have to change?
here a couple sites i found. the 2nd site has a good walkthrough. i googled "quake2 install how to" and found quite a few links. you basically need a loki installer or a linux installer of some type. mount the cd and run the installer. copy the pak0 to pak3 files to the baseq3 folder (not sure on q2). when done, open a terminal and type quake2. that should do it.
I don't know if this'll help the performance problem or not, but what version of Quake2 are you using? For a long time I was using what was calles 3.20final. But then I found a newer release, 3.21r0.16. It's been some time since I've looked for an even newer release. This one either supports or requires (I forget which) a file called maxpack.pak.
As for performance, I'd recommend running the game in lower resolution such as 800x600 or even 640x480. And maybe even windowed instead of fullscreen. Personally I use a windowed 512x384.
