Quake II: No sound: Sorry but your soundcard can't do this

Running quake 2 ver 3.20

I get the error message:

------- sound initialization -------
Sorry but your soundcard can't do this
------- Loading ref_glx.so -------
ref_gl version: GL 0.01

I am running kernel-smp-2.4.20-8
I have guillemot/forte media sound card chipset is a yamaha ymf-744b linux driver ymfpci
nvidia geforce 4 mx 420 running open glx
Quake 2 has sound under windozes
XMMS and other sound appz have no problem with the card

I have looked around the site and almost all posts seem to have the
could not mmap /dev/dsp
problem. I am not. Also during my reading I found for sound issues I should chmod 666 /dev/dsp from 662 However, this did no good and I will change it back.
The quake 2 readme.txt shows quake II wants 100% compatible sound blaster card and I am fairly certain the card is supposed to be 100%, but who knows.

Are you running any programs in the background that may be accessing the sound card? If so, close those programs out. Try disabling ALSA

I thank you for the reply.

done that already with fuser

example with no known user of dsp
[root@localhost /]# fuser -u /dev/dsp
[root@localhost /]#

example after firing up XMMS
[root@localhost /]# fuser -u /dev/dsp
/dev/dsp: 6863(********)

****=ficticious user

How would I disable Alsa without killing the process?

I setup quake 2 on my daughter's machine with RH 9.0 with a different sound card and it works flawlessly. She is using a ess 1869 I think. I believe that I have come to the determination that I need a true blaster compatible sound card. despite what it says on the box I don't think the YMF-744B is as 100% compatible as they state.

Everyone else that I have asked kind of shrug their shoulders with a question mark over their heads. :Pengy:  and state get a real sound card. LOL

BTW, I changed my sound card to a sound blaster and all is well now.:D :study: :Pengy: :D

Hey I used to be a quake 2 *.PRO I played it for 3 years. 24/7 day and night. CTF rocks. Then I stopped playing it because it too old. I tried CS but got bord (too slow action / no grapple / no jumping around / no rocket launcher etc. etc.) Then I started playing UT and now Halo. Halo is the only reason I'm using Windows for.
Anyways, don't you think it's kind to too late to play quake now? How old is it anyways?

Not really! Its fun. especially making things work that people say you will never get that to work. gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling of self satisfaction.:D
