Quake 3 Arena

I have a lan set up with a crossover cable. When I try to get Quake 3 to join my host over the lan (192.168.0.1) it says "CLIENT_UNKNOWN_TO_AUTH" and if I let it sit at that screen it just sits there. It will not join. These are using two different CD keys.

Disable punk buster

You should be able to disable punk buster or download a copy of punkbuster from the punkbuster site.

I might be wrong though

OK, Quake 3 doesn't show my local server under the multiplayer menu either. When I manually type the IP address it connects but it will not join due to the CLIENT_UNKNOWN_TO_AUTH error.

Your server needs to be able to access the master servers. So, if you're behind any kind of a firewall, you need to forward the ports 27950, 27952, 27960, and 27965 to your server.

Add this to your server.cfg:

sv_strictauth 0

That should fix the problem.
