Problems running Quake 3 Arena...

I'm sure there are more than enough Q3 topics like this, but I have addressed the two problems I encounterd that I found answers to on this forum. And now I've come to a third problem. (its always the same thing with me and linux, just one problem after another >.<) Here is the console output:

First off I couldn't even get it to run in hardware mode (obviously still can't), and now this... Any feedback?

I'm on Ubuntu 5.04 Hoary Hedgehog

What video card have you got installed?

Nvidia or ATI or Something else?

Basically you require a true 3d accelerated driver to play Quake 3, and at present you dont appear to have one, hence the game wont run.

If you have a nvidia graphics card (easy to fix), then download this file from there website: http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L...-7174-pkg1.run

1. Kill whatever window manager you have running (KDE/Gnome/etc), when you get back to the login screen, hold down ctrl+alt+F4, you should be at a console login screen, login as root.
2. type in: init 3 <hit enter>
3. cd to the directory where the nvidia file you downloaded earlier is stored.
4. type in: sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run
5. follow instructions and hopefully it should be installed ok.
6. At this point you need to find a file called xorg.conf. On my box its stored at /etc/X11/xorg.conf, it maybe the same for yours, if not you can use locate to find it.
7. edit xorg.conf in your favourite editor, find the line that says:
Driver "nv"
Should be under: Section "Device"
Change nv to nvidia
Save file

Now type in: init 5

All being well a nvidia splash screen should show, and voila, youre accelerated.

For ATI Cards its a bit harder, and since ive never tortured myself by buying an ATI card i cant tell you how to install for that.

Theres a guide here, if you wish to try it.

I forgot to mention that I run an ATI 9600XT. I did install the drivers and edit my xorg.conf file

Just ran into the same problem, using a 9800 pro and also on Ubuntu.

Let me know if you find a fix, I'll post if i find anything ..

Edit; I just figured it out. I copied over the rest of the pk3's off of the cd into the baseq3 folder and it seems to be working fine
