poor performance in UT2004 and AA w/ nVidia card


hey all,

i'm running a FC3 box w/ an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ and a Chaintech nVidia GeForce4 FX5900XT. i installed the latest nvidia driver and it works, but i am getting horrible video performance when i try to play UT2004 or America's Army. i can play both games in windows will resolution up to 1600x1200 and all the details on the highest setting without any problems on both games, but in linux i can't play either games using 800x600 and the lowest settings because the framerate is so low. i did everything that the nvidia readme.txt told me to, but i'm wondering if there is something else i need to load or something that i should change in my xorg.conf file or in an nvidia file to get my card performing somewhere close to what it does in windows, or at least to the point where games are playable? any help is appreciated!!!

my experiences with fc3 havn't been good for games, but i hear the problem is too many things running the background which lags the cpu. This makes sense as i was getting top fps but it was jerky as all hell.

however i have seen games being run fine on fc3, i guess its how you set it up on the install.

plz correct me if im wrong

i took a look at my xorg.conf file and it looks the exact same as yours. thanks for the suggestion though. is there possibly something that i can modify in the nvidia driver itself? any suggestions are welcome!

The performance problem you're having is your nVidia card is not running with 'Direct Rendering' ie no hardware acceleration enabled, so you need to go back and check the steps you followed when you installed it.

I'm a bit of a linux newbie, so i'm not exactly sure how to go about getting Direct Rendering working. I took a look at the nVidia README.txt that came w/ the driver for anything on direct rendering and this is all it says:

direct rendering clients such as GLX have no way of knowing that they are
supposed to render into a pixmap, and will draw directly to the screen
instead.
and it recommends that you add this to your xorg.conf:

Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "boolean"
Enables GLX even when the Composite X extension is loaded.
ENABLE AT YOUR OWN RISK. OpenGL applications will not

loaded.
I added that, but it didnt change anything, so i'm not quite sure where to go from here. Would you recommend trying to reinstall the driver? Is there something else that i change in xorg.conf? Thanks a lot for the responses!

You definately dont want Composite support enabled, also check that the nvidia kernel module is loaded by running (as root) 'lsmod'

It should look something like this..

the nvidia module was not loaded and running modprobe loaded it, but direct rendering was still off, and there was no performance changes. thanks for the suggestion, i really appreciate the help!

Ok, it looks like you will have to post the xorg log file, its kinda long, but I cant think of any other way to see whats going on, the file should be in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

You still have the composite extension enabled
