Original quake singleplayer?

My current project is to get all the quake/quake2 etc and spinoffs working

However, with quake1, the id binaries don't work (but htats documented)

but using an alternative engine, i can only seem to get to the multiplayer interface, quakeforge for examplye i can get working (no sound as of yet) but i cannot get into a singleplayer match

is there an engine that i can play quake byu myself with?

or if i can do it on the original or quakeforge (the ones i already have) then how?

I'm feeling kinda lost here, any help appreciated

running 2.6.10 kernel, slackware (almost)current, presario laptop (doubt any of that's needed)

thanks -0-

The DarkPlaces engine is good for that, if you don't mind updated graphics. That's what I use for my Quake singleplayer needs.
