openarena crashes x server

first ill tell you my computer specs
  • Pentium 3 550 megahertz
  • 256 megabytes ram
  • generic video card
  • running debian (i think etch not 100%)
  • kde and gnome (primary kde)
  • 80 gig hard drive 50 gigs or so free
  • lots of libs and codecs and such
  • thats it

the game is openarena a quake3 clone

my first question is should that work for running it?

also what other factors would cause x server to crash?
