I found that gxmame works well on Suse. I think you'll find it in YaST. However, I had no joy with this in Debian (it wouldn't read the ROMS) and I now use sdlmame which you can use with xmame gui if you don't want to run from the command line.
Actually, I've just remembered that I didn't find gxmame in YaST but in pbone, or some other such rpm site. You need to download and install xmame tools first, though.
I think xmame tools is the only dependency, but you might need to add xmame-x11 and xmame base. Trouble is, these two need each other! I got round that by putting the rpms I downloaded on the desktop, then doing Applications / System / Configuration / Install Software. Then I clicked the 'configure' button and in the services tab clicked add service . From here I typed the URL of the desktop then I clicked close. In the search bar I typed xmame and pressed the search button. Finally, I ticked the xmame packages and away it went! This always worked for me, and I did have to do it on a number of occasions!
