old school ports of games

This post is going to age me a bit...

Back in the days before the internet, I remember playing several really great games found on BBS's that I would like to introduce to my kids. for christmas I am putting together a couple old machines for the kids to play games on, and I think they would enjoy some of them, like Commander Keen, Jill of the Jungle, the original Prince of Persia, and for the older child the original Elders scrolls game Arena. These games are so old that many of them are open sourced or abandonedware games. Does anyone know any repositories where one could find them ported to linux or play them through dosemu?

Commander Keen is available on Steam. You can safely assume that, like the rest of ID Software's DOS games on Steam, it will work with DosBox.

The Elder Scrolls: Arena can be freely downloaded from the official Elder Scrolls website and comes with instructions how to use it with DosBox: http://www.elderscrolls.com/arena/

We will certainly not post links to those. Those are illegal.

Anyway, you do know about gog.com, right? They don't have the specific games you mentioned, but selling DOS-Win95 games is pretty much their niche.

Use dosbox or scummvm for the ones that it supports. Search the net for the games, I won't post links, not because they are illegal (the companies that made them have disappeared and will not be suing from the grave) but because you can find them with a simple search.

Thank you for the useful information, and I understand not linking to some of the titles... I was looking for some of the older games like in the case of arena where the company freely distributes it or where it has been source coded and ported natively to *nix. I did not realize id was still selling their ancient titles like that! :) Thank you all for the assistance, and if you think of any that that have been source released/open sourced that you think I might be interested for this, I'd appreciate it :)

How about Star Control 2?

Search for more here:

You still need the data, which is actually not abandonware and is being sold.

Which, as I've already mentioned, you can buy from Steam! Say no more about where to get the data.
