Old classics ported to linux?
Hi,
I just found myself wondering what great games I have missed from the past. I have found Ur-Quan Masters which is Star Control port to linux and it is awesome. Is there a list of these kind of classic games that have been ported to linux? I know of dosbox and scummvm but I want games that have been truly ported to linux. I must test Beneath a Steel Sky once I get home... |

You may try and use emulators.
For example, there are a number of free Atari ST emulators, and there's an Open Source ROM available (EmuTOS), and you can freely (sort of freeware) download "Vroom", courtesy of Lankhor. Yves. |
I don't mean emulators and roms but natively ported games to linux / remakes of old games to linux like Ur-Quan Masters and Beneath a Steel Sky.

You can use ScummVM to play old scumm games such as the great The Secret of Monkey Island. There are a lot of old games playable under ScummVM. Take a look in the site http://www.scummvm.org/

Ohhhh I was delighted when I leanred that the old game Oxyd had been ported to linux under the name Enigma. It was that puzzle game where you would move your little glass ball around and bump it against stuff to find all the colored nodes. Sounds really easy, but jesus, it gets hard as hell. Some of the levels are exactly alike the origional game, and theres tons of new ones. I don't believe I ever finished the origional Oxyd, but Enigma has a LARGE list of levels, you could play for months.

OpenTTD = Remake of Transport Tycoon Deluxe:
http://www.openttd.com/ Pingus = Remake of Lemmings: http://pingus.seul.org/welcome.html Check out this website for more: http://www.happypenguin.org/ Contrary to popular belief, there are heaps of games/ports/emulators available for Linux. You can even play the latest Windows games with Cedega. |
I almost forgot Pingus WAS a port of the old Lemmings game. I remember when I first played it (some 10 years after I'd played the origonal one on DOS at my grandmother's house) and I was like "boy, this feels so farmilliar.... OMG LEMMINGS!" I really wish they would develop the rest of the levels, it would be a very nice game. From what I gather, the only official levels released are the ones on that training island. :( I have tried some of the ones that are "in development" but most of them are really buggy, some to the point of being unplayable. I'm afraid to play those, because it'd be kinda shitty to play the game for 10 hours straight or whatever on a level that nobody informed you was IMPOSSIBLE to beat because its still in development.

That'd be a pisser. |
LoL, now that I think about it, I believe I did play one of those development levels for about 2 hours straight one time trying to figure it out before I went on google and realized that it wasn't yet functional. I was pissedddddd.
