Nethack Save Problems

When i try to save in Nethack, it says "Saving ... Cannot open Save file". Is there a file that i have to create? did i install nethack badly (was, afterall, my first install.) Just trying to find an easy way to fix this great game.

You probably don't have write permissions to /usr/games/lib/nethackdir. Try giving yourself write permissions to that directory.

Sorry, forgot to mention, I'm playing as root, the game won't even start as any other user

Edit: Here's the ls -l command line for the /usr/games/lib/nethackdir
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Feb 6 18:10 nethackdir/

still to new to figure out EXACTLY what that means...hmm

I am also having this problem. Net hack loads fine but for some reason it can't open the file to save. I have tried messing around with permissions. Currently I am operating out of a folder that the user owns and is 777 (a little redundant) so most likly it isn't the permissions. I have never seen a nethack save file so I don't know what to look for, but no new files are created anyway (they all have the same timestamp) this is incredibly annoying please help.
