Morrowind: Unknown frame buffer mode

I hope someone will be able to help me here...

I just bought Cedega and installed Morrowind. (Actually, i have installed it several times...) When i use the cedega setup.exe command, it installs nicely. It even asks me to install Directx. But when I go to play the game, I get this error:
Render Creation Error: "Unknown frame buffer mode."

I also tried to install this game using Loki installers, and it works great, I don't get that error, but if I install with Loki I can't patch the game with its updates. I guess I'll go back to that if I have to, but maybe someone here can help.

The game will run if I install with Loki if I type "morrowind" from a command-line, but I will get that same error if I try to play the game by finding "morrowind.exe" and right-clicking and choosing open with Cedega. Why will that give me the error, and not typing "morrowind" from a commandline?

I suspect permissions but I may be wrong... Should I change all permissions on this folder? How would I do that?

The game runs fine on my box in Windows, and I have Nvidia, with the newest drivers. Maybe I need to tinker with my xconfig file? I'm also on Slackware 10.0

hey linda, did u get a fix for that problem? I just tried installing morrowind and I get the same "unknown framebuffer mode" error msg...

i'm using an ATI 9700pro on cedega 4.3.2.

Thanks!

It's been a long time since I messed around with it. I never did get it to work for me in a user mode, as opposed to root. And I didn't like that, so I have been using Windows to play the game.

I do remember that Cedega didn't help. Running the plain version of Wine that is free was just as good. This is one of my summer projects, to play around with Linux again, so I'll let you know. I do remember though, that the problem seemed to me to be in permissions. If I installed and played as root, it worked fine. And everything I tried with permissions didn't get rid of that error when I tried to play as a user.

So my advice to you would be to install it as root, play it as root, and see if it works. If it does, then maybe you'll have more knowledge about how to make it run as a user! (and be sure to post it here... ) :D

i got it to work under a normal user, but only in fullscreen mode and after installing tribunal and bloodmoon and patching. Then it works, slowly, but then crashes right after I try to leave the boat the character starts in. I think the real problem is w/ the ati video card, the driver is probably not as good as nvidia and that's why it crashes. I also tried the "pthreads no" to start cedega and it didn't help either.

You should download the patch from the Bethesda site. Then try starting the game. I had the same problem, but it now starts up and I've been playing it for well over a week with no problems (except the maps aren't right).

See my post here on how I got Morrowind to install and run.

Hope this helps.

do u have ati or nvidia?

Texicle 06-23-2005 09:36 PM

I've got nVidia...

that's why it works. Ati drivers are terrible compared to nvidia. With ATI the game crashes after u try to leave to an exterior area.
