Linux-based Game Program Groups

I've been thinking: Linux doesn't have any really good games out for it, so I got to thinking

"Hey, what if some good programmers and testers got together and started producing some good solid MMORPGs, FPSs, and RTSs"

Well, when you think about it, it makes sense. There are the resources, the talent (Hey, if we can make a 50MB distro do pretty much everything it takes Windows around 5G to do, and then ALOT it cann't do, we can do almost anything), as well as the fact WE NEED NATIVE GAMES! I know some FPSs work on Linux nativly, but come on, why use Cedega when you could make your own games?

Personally, I don't know much about building 3D games (I can work on text-based, but those seem less popular), but I'm willing to test out whatever I can.

Personally, I would like to see something similar to WoW/GW built for Linux (only you know, fun for more then one go-around), or native Starcraft/D2 type games.

Ultimatly, this would be a big selling point for Linux if people made Linux-only games (Eh, incorporate Mac to, they're good people) that would rival, if not surpass, what Windows had to offer.

Define "good" games?

Have you seen:
General:
Linux X-Gamers

MMORPG...
Eternal Lands
Daimonin
Ryzom

FPS...
Unreal Tournament
Cube

RTS...
Magnant

... and so on.

There are also no end of tools for making more of these. Even 3D toolkits for building worlds for mmorpgs.

Add to this that most popular clients for online games are supported in cedega ...

So I think you need to be more specific here, what are you looking for that you havn't found.

Something that doesn't require an emulator or other virtual machine, if you will.

I'm picky on games (My fav game of all times is Planescape: Torment. Its an old D&D style RPG that is loooooooooong, but is a REAL RPG instead of an action/adventure), and alot of what is made today I don't care much for, but I'll look into those links. I checked the wiki, but wasn't impressed with anything from there.

It is certainly true they don't make rpg's like they used to. In many cases, the pre-immersion-graphics games had a lot going for them.

Planescape: Torment runs under WineX: http://www.liflg.org/?catid=7&gameid=40 is not an emulator, but you will include it in your "picky" list.

Hav you seen GemRB?

You realise a lot of older games have been ported to linux?

No, I havn't, actually. I know alot of them SHOULD run under WineX/Cedega, but finding the good games has proven difficult. I'm spent some time (not alot, I'll admit) looking for some good ones, and so far all I've really found are Foobillards and Patience (The one with like, 20 Solitare-type games). Beyond that, the graphics kinda suck, and gameplay is almost as bad. Wesnoth is OK, but I don't care for alot of its functions (the recruitment system is a bit annoying. One guy and BAM, you cann't make any new units).

Mind telling me WHERE these old games are hidden, please?

Try googling for "abandonware".
Is there a particular oldy you would like to see?

Specific games I have personally tried:

Beneith a Steel Sky
Ultima 4 (and above with exult)
Doom (Though FPS is not really me...)

Old games tend to poor graphics ... hey: a lot of them were for good old VGA on 8-bit machines. They tended to make up for the graphics quality in some other way.

Then, of course, Vulture's Eye will probably be to your liking; despite being a work in progress.

Native Games:
Flightgear, Simutrans, Lincity-ng

There is even an "ultimate gaming" linux distro.
You really should look harder.
