How do I install soldier of fortune 2 on my slackware system? When I run the cd-rom drive it just won't install =/ I'm such a f00kin n00b =( Pleeeaaase help me 1337s!

Hmpf, I install wine with pkgtool but when I run wine ./mnt/cdrom/setup/setup.exe but it just tells me
wine: cannot open /root/.wine : No such file or directory

lockup problem? although i use winex, ive never had one...

The system doesn't lock up as such, just the game. It starts running fine, but inevitably, in the Prague mission once I pass through the containers area (towards the hotel) the game start to show these locks. At first it simply stopped for about 5 secs and then continued playing, but after the first appeard, it was like an additive effect, the second would take less to appear and more to go, and so on, rendering the game unplayable after just 4 freezes. I was always able to shut the game down from a console (ctrl-alt-F1 log in as the user, killall -9 wine). This problem heppened to me with either Wine (binary or compiled from source), WineX CVS & WineX registetered.

My system has a Radeon 9500 as the graphics adapter, which I always use with the most current up-2-date drivers from ATi ('cept for the 3.7 which are crap) on Fedora Core 1, with custom kernels. Since version 3.1 of WineX I gave up on this game, so I assume the problem may as well has been washed away, also I haven't tried it on new kernels (currently using 2.6.2).

OF COURSE I DID!!!! Well, with gnome I can browse them but when I try "open with" and wine on the /setup/setup.exe file nothing happens!!!

This is in GNOME or KDE? As I don't use KDE I couldn't say what's wrong, but in GNOME, sometimes you associate a program to a file, but said program is not used to open the file type by default. So you have to again go into open with-->other application, a window with the possible programs to use is displayed, all you have to do is select the program, go into details and activate it...

I find quite strange your problem with KDE, since basically what konqueror will do is to check if there's anything at your CD mount point (much like any other folder in your HDD)...:scratch:

If you have it in the menu, then you may only select it from the menu (not always works) just to verify, you may see how is the wine(x) item displayed; as in wine(x) is the menu for application/x-exe or something like that. You may select it (activate it) so it's called whenever you double click an .exe item. Mind you that if you double click an executable file, but nothing happens (after a little HDD activity) then most likely wine(x) crashed or the debugger was called. In order to isolate possible problems kill all wine processes: in terminal issue the command...
Then in the same terminal call wine(x3) and said executable. In your case it may be:
Pay special attention to the output on the console!

EDIT:
Some .exe programs will provoke a lot outuput to the console regarding symbols and (mainly) character encoding. Depending on the Setup.exe program you are trying to run, this will eventually crash wine and call up on the debugger. This is especially true for the Soldier Of Fortune 2 Setup program :cry:

Just to avoid confution, I stated wine(x3) to imply if you're using either wine (classic) or WineX (winex3 command) to call the wine libraries...
