I am having trouble using Wine to install/run Word of Warcraft.

I followed the instructions form the page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WorldofWarcraft but at one part it said to "Select your Windows type, configure disk and removable drives, etc, then press Apply and Ok" and I guesse I did it wrong cause when I did everything else on the page I typed wine Installer.exe into the terminal like it told me to. Then an error box came up saying "This installer faild to start up. You may be out of hard drive space." or something like that. I still have 20 Gb on there so i know that isn't realy the problem. Any suggestions?

I think I know what I did wrong but how do I fix it?

I think that Wine is trying to look for or execute everything in //windows//usr//what ever and I am using 100% Ubuntu. Those files don't exist. However I still don't know how to fix that. If anyone knows how to use Wine to install programs please reply. I have Teamspeak and WoW downloaded on my comp but idk how to install it.

How do I cnfigure Wine?

Wow 41 veiws and no replys. I guese that no one knows understands my problem. I was following instructions on how to install WoW with Wine and it told me I needed to configure wine so it would run. I don't know what I am supposed to configure it as. The web page told me to run the comand winecfg in terminal and when I did I got this.

Warning: the specified Windows directory L"c:\\windows" is not accessible.
Warning: the specified System directory L"c:\\windows\\system32" is not accessible.

err:winecfg:load_drives GetVolumeInformation() for 'D:\' failed, setting serial to 0
err:shell:SHGetFolderPathW Failed to create directory L"c:\\windows\\profiles\\gamepro\\Desktop".

I waited a litle while and the Wine configureation program started up. I set my Windows version to Windows xp and clicked the Drivers link and told it to auto detect my drivers and it found C: drive_c, D: /media/cdromO, E: /, H: /cdrom/DirectX/, I: /home/gamepro, and drive Z: /cdrom/DirectX/

I will continue this in the next post because I am running out of room.

My last reply continued.

I then clicked the Graphics link and I noticed that my screen resolution was 96 dpi (what should it be? I have 1024-728 or whatever it is) but I did not change anything. I then clicked the Applications link (the one that it started in) clicked apply then continue. When I did that I looked back at my Terminal and this is what was in there (the following message includes what was in the last message, this is all that went through the terminal after typing winecfg).

When I try type cd /home/gamepro/WoW
as it says to on the website it works fine but then I type
wine installer.exe
as it also says to on the website I get an error box saying that Wine was unable to start up and I might be out of hard drive space. I have 20 Gb's left wo that can't be the problem.

Game Pro:

I'm a huge fan of WoW and GNU/Linux.

<rant>Sucks that nVidia is evil, and there isn't a Free Software game like WoW available yet.</rant>

I've got WoW running flawlessly on Debian Etch and Gentoo w/nVidia drivers.

What distro are you using?

List your hardware as well. I might be able to help.

Cheers.

Running Wine manually?

I had an idea for running the installer.exe file of WoW on Wine and what I did was go into the file /home/<user_name>/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/<user_name>/My Documents/<name of folder with WoW contents in it> (the .wine file is invisible type /home/<user_name/.wine into the location bar) While I was in this file I clicked the Installer.exe program and I got a Message box saying,

Cannot open Installer.exe

The filename "Installer.exe" indicates that this file is of type "executable". The contents of the file indicate that the file is of type "DOS/Windows executable". If you open this file, the file might present a security risk to your system.

Do not open the file unless you created the file yourself, or received the file from a trusted source. To open the file, rename the file to the correct extension for "DOS/Windows executable", then open the file normally. Alternatively, use the Open With menu to choose a specific application for the file.

the window had only one button Cancel. What Is the correct extension for Dos/Windows executable?

And BTW I am subscribed to Gamepro Magazine and they told me about a free MMO-RPG called Mabinogi witch can be downloaded and played for free at mabinogi.nexon.net Another free game you could try is Guild wars. I don't know how well these games go on Linnux because I haven't had time to try them yet.

Game Pro - Ubuntu, like almost every other Linux, doesn't work the same as Windows. You need to learn some command line stuff.

Also, if you search Google, there's tons of postings about how to get WoW to work on Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo, you name it. Don't be afraid to keep searching. I've written at least 2 complete instructions on how to get it running, but my instructions are old, and don't work with the new versions of wine.
