How to Install Doom3
I purchased Doom 3 back when the game was released and was wondering if I can install from disks on my Linux machine like I would with UT2004? I have a licensed copy of the game but I was not sure if the retail version only supported Windows and how I can install this on a Linux machine.

ID released a linux client after shipping doom 3.
You can find it as a free download from one of their websites. Google for "doom 3 linux client" Install the client, then you simply copy the data files off of your purchased doom 3 cd onto your harddrive and you're set. |
So I found this from their FTP server...
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/doom3/linux/ I assume I download the 16.4MB "run" file? Is that all I need? I am not sure what you mean copy files from my retail disks and to where? Is the 16.4MB file what I need since I assume that is step #1? |
bump? Anyone?

Find the site and read the instructions. Doing research for other people is a tiring business.

Just run the 16 meg script file and it will install the doom 3 client.
The website will tell you which specific data files need to be copied off the doom 3 cd's. I'd tell you which ones but I don't remember. It's not hard to find the answer considering you've already tracked down their website. I'm also pretty sure that running doom3 after installing it will complain and tell you which files to copy if they aren't already there. |
I actually had a hard time finding clear, explicit instructions on how to do this myself; I only didn't have any trouble because I'm familiar with how id Software has always packaged their games.
As mentioned, run the file you downloaded. Then, go to this site. Scroll down to where it says "Patch Installation Instructions" and copy the files it says to where it says. |
Thanks for the positive info and feedback guys. I will post my success as soon as I get this going.
