How to edit XF86config file with new driver
 
I am Running Mandrake Linux 9.2.I installed New NVIDIA driver, and Im running into problems (cant login to destkop via startx cmd), becuase from what I've read, I didnt edit the config file. I copied it onto a floppy, what changes do I need to make? Here it is:

Then how do I upload it back into the Mandrake OS?

Mine, with nvidia and generic wheelmouse, mandrake 9.1 (the monitor settings are on the very generic side, so if you copy it directly, you don't explode your screen) :) You can use 'xf86cfg -textmode' to edit these files, as well. Hope it helps.

To upload it, hit <ctrl><alt><F2> to get to a console, then use whatever editor you like to retype it. The best option is to have a backup already there, so you can 'cp XF86Config-4~ XF86Config-4", thereby copying the backup (the ~ file) to the correct spot. (The -4 is sometimes optional.) Of course, the preferred way (for myself) is simply to run 'xf86cfg -textmode' and get a generic setting going, then adjusting things there, because it's more comfortable to work from X.

it's only that line where it stands Driver "svga" to Driver "nvidia".... to copy from the floppy to the file, do as you did to copy into the floppy. I assume that you did:

cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /mnt/floppy

then do

cp /mnt/floppy/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config

You might need to mount the disk first with:

mount /mnt/floppy

...

even with the svga driver you should be able to log in to X
however, change it to "nvidia" , last poster was correct, if all else fails use
"vesa"
it sucks but it works.
